FAQ

What is Base64?

Base64 is a way to represent binary data using only 64 printable characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, +, /). It is commonly used to embed data in text formats such as JSON, XML, HTML and email.

Is Base64 encryption?

No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption — anyone can decode it. Never use it to protect passwords or secrets.

Why do some Base64 strings end with =?

The = characters are padding: they make the encoded length a multiple of four and can safely be omitted when decoding. This tool accepts both forms.

Does it support emoji and non-English text?

Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 before Base64, so Chinese, Japanese, Korean, emoji and any other Unicode characters round-trip correctly.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser. Your data never leaves your device.

Can it decode Base64URL (URLs and JWTs)?

Yes. The decoder also accepts the URL-safe alphabet (- and _) used in JWTs and URLs.
